Bartho Eksteen Ouskool Rhone-style Red 2014

Ouskool is usually a blend of Shiraz, Mourvédre, Grenache and Viognier dictated by the specific vintage.

As a rule, Viognier will ripen before Shiraz and is considered “spice” in a Rhône-style blend, with the high ripeness at which it is harvested providing a pleasant dried apricot character to the wine. Grenache adds red berry fruit flavours to the blend and Mourvèdre a pleasant earthiness. This wine is limited to the ten best barrels in the cellar.

As a rule, the composition of any blend will be determined by the vintage. The 2014 vintage forced us to exclude the later ripening varieties such as Grenache and Mourvèrdre from this release due to excessive rain late in the picking season.
